TOPIC #1: Truth, Compassion & Wisdom — Responding to Identity and Sexuality in the Christian Classroom
Questions surrounding sexuality, gender, identity, and belonging are increasingly entering Christian classrooms. For many educators, these conversations can feel difficult to navigate. Teachers may want to remain faithful to biblical convictions while also responding to students with compassion, wisdom, and appropriate professional boundaries.
This session approaches the conversation from a distinctly Christian perspective while beginning with the person behind the issue. We will will examine how biblical truth and genuine compassion can coexist, how teachers can build empathy without compromising Christian conviction, and how their first response can either create an opportunity for trust and discipleship or unintentionally increase shame and isolation.
TOPIC #2: Beyond Defiance — Understanding ADHD, ODD, and the Power of Co-Regulation
What happens when simple classroom direction becomes a power struggle?
For students with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) frequently combined with
Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), behaviours that appear deliberately disrespectful, noncompliant, or defiant may occur alongside difficulties with impulse control, executive
functioning, emotional regulation, frustration tolerance, or established patterns of oppositional interaction. How an educator responds in the first moments of escalation can influence the degree of dysregulation.
This workshop aims to equip educators to look beneath challenging behaviour without lowering expectations for appropriate conduct. Participants will examine ADHD and ODD through an
evidence-informed lens and explore how behavioural classroom strategies can be combined with calm, discreet co-regulation techniques to interrupt escalating interactions before they become public power struggles.
