TEACHING BEYOND THE LESSON PLAN

In every Christian classroom there are students who arrive with stories they never say out loud—stories of being moved, judged, labeled, or left. Some have heard, in words or in silence, “you can’t.” And some will go on to do exactly what they were told they couldn’t… because one adult in a school chose to stay, to see them, and to believe in them.

As Christian educators we are not only delivering curriculum. We are stewarding image-bearers. We are planting seeds we may never see harvested.

           The following 10 practices

are not theory; they are the habits of teachers whose presence became ministry, whose classrooms became places of grace.

           Key Verse:

“Let us not grow weary in doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” —

           Galatians 6:9

           1. Your Words Stay With Them

Students remember what we say, even the comments we forget by the end of the day. A careless word can wound for years, but a kind word can become the reason a student keeps trying. In a Christian school, our words carry the weight of our witness. Speak as if they will carry your words forever, because they often do.

           2. "Slow" Often Means "Different"

Learning disabilities and language struggles are not signs of low intelligence, only different ways of thinking and processing. What makes school hard today may become a student’s greatest strength tomorrow, because finding another way around a problem builds creativity and resilience. God gifts His children diversely. Look for their strength, not just their struggle.

           3. Belonging Comes First

Students don’t get their lives together and then find community; they find a team, a club, a group that accepts them, and then they begin to grow. The student who lingers after class or practice is often looking for family, not just an activity. In our schools, belonging is a doorway to discipleship. Let them in.

           4. Time Beats Judgment

Judging a student only labels them, but spending time with them changes them. We do not have to fix a child’s whole life to make an eternal difference; we only have to be the person who notices and doesn’t walk away. Ten minutes after class can matter more than any lesson plan.

           5. You’re Teaching a Future Adult

The difficult child in front of you today may be the teacher, pastor, parent, or leader of tomorrow. One day they may stand in front of others and say, “I was you,” because someone once believed in them. Teach the adult they will become, not just the child you see now.

           6. Discipline Builds Confidence

Sports, music, art, and routines give students a way to succeed when academics feel like failure. Structure and practice teach them they can do hard things, and that sense of competence builds identity. Give them something they can master with their hands and heart, not just their grades.

           7. Not Everyone Shows Smart the Same Way

Some students cannot show what they know on a test or essay, but they can build it, draw it, speak it, move it, or serve it. When one way of expressing intelligence is closed to them, offer another. Intelligence is wider than the curriculum, and gifting is wider than the report card.

           8. Free Things Matter Most

For students with no money, free clubs and events are not “extra”—they are the only door they can walk through. A free meal after school, a free trip, a free place to belong can be the difference between being included and being invisible. In Christian community, what costs nothing can mean everything.

           9. See the Child, Not the Label

Labels like “learning disabled,” “low math,” or “behavior problem” are notes for adults, but they become identity for children. A label may describe a challenge, but it must never decide a future. Look past the file and see the person God is forming.

           10. Staying Is Teaching

Showing up, remembering names, asking again next week—this is how students learn they matter. For children who have been left, consistency is the lesson. Be the adult who stays, because that is the lesson they will never forget.

CONCLUSION - Faithful in the Hidden Work

We may never see the harvest. We may not be there when the student we encouraged becomes the speaker, the parent, or the mentor who breaks a cycle in their family. But the seed we plant by staying, by speaking life, by giving them a place to belong in Christ—that seed grows.

           A Personal Note

The principles above are not abstract to me. I came from a broken home, moved through foster families, and struggled with dyslexia at a time when schools had few strategies to help. I was confused, behind, and often looked down on by my peers. Yet teachers and church leaders chose to invest in me anyway. Because they stayed, I learned to see the good in others — and now I spend my life trying to do the same. There is hope for the students of tomorrow, because there was hope for me.

The Kingdom is full of adults who remember one teacher.
Be that teacher.
Keep showing up.
Keep believing.
Keep staying.
One day someone will stand in front of a room and say, “I am here because a teacher didn’t give up on me.”
And by God’s grace, that teacher will be you.
Saved by grace — and by teachers who stayed.

As I reflect on our shared calling in Christian education, I keep coming back to the life of Stephen—a powerful example of someone who truly lived as a "difference maker".

In Acts 6–7, Stephen wasn’t in what many would consider a prominent role, yet his impact was extraordinary. He was full of faith, wisdom, and the Holy Spirit. He served faithfully, spoke truth with courage, and trusted God no matter the cost. Stephen reminds us that being a "difference maker" isn’t about title or position—it’s about a heart fully surrendered to God.

And that’s the opportunity in front of each of us every day—to be a "difference maker" right where God has placed us. In our classrooms, in our offices, and around our board tables, the small things we do faithfully can have a lasting impact.

Here are five qualities I see in every "difference maker" across our schools:

           1. Christ-Centered Vision

A "difference maker" keeps Jesus at the center of it all—not just in what we say, but in how we live and lead every day. It shows up in the choices we make, the priorities we set, and the example we model for others.

           2. Servant Leadership

A "difference maker" leads by serving, choosing humility, kindness, and a genuine care for others. It’s about lifting people up, being present, and creating space for others to thrive.

           3. Commitment to Excellence

A "difference maker" gives their best, not for recognition, but as an act of worship. It’s a daily commitment to grow, improve, and steward well the responsibility we’ve been given.

           4. Relational Intentionality

A "difference maker" takes time for people, knowing that relationships are where real impact happens. A listening ear, a word of encouragement, or a moment of care can make all the difference.

           5. Courageous Faith

A "difference maker" trusts God even when it’s not easy, standing firm in truth and stepping forward with confidence. It’s about choosing faith over fear and believing God is at work in every situation.

As we move forward together, my encouragement is simple: keep showing up, keep trusting God, and keep being a "difference maker". What you do matters more than you may ever fully see, and the impact will last far beyond today.

That’s the inspiration behind the “8 P’s Model” for Change Management, a unique approach that blends gardening wisdom with faith-based principles—making it especially relevant for Christian schools and its leaders.

Change isn’t just about shifting gears; it’s about purposeful transformation that honours a school’s mission and deeply rooted values. By understanding how individuals and communities journey from one state to another, leaders can ensure every adjustment is meaningful, lasting, and unified.

Through this process, you’ll discover how aligning change with mission fosters collaboration and long-term growth, setting the stage for a new season of flourishing in your school community. Get ready to dig in and explore the eight steps that will help your school grow forward—together.

Leaders need to plan carefully, help staff, teachers and stakeholders adapt, and pay attention to school culture for smooth transitions. There are several models for managing change, like Lewin’s three-step process, Kotter’s 8-Step Model, and the ADKAR Model.

The 8-P Model guides leaders through eight steps—Picture, Plan, Plow, Plant, Protect, Prune, Pollinate, and Propagate—so growth matches the school’s values.

The “Growing Forward” model encourages thoughtful and prayerful progress using these faith-driven and gardening principles. It helps leaders turn vision into real results, nurture a positive culture, and focus on students’ faith and wisdom. All of which means change theory and the 8-P Framework will help Christian schools work together for improvement, involving students, parents, churches, educators, community members, and boards.

1 - Picture: Cast the Vision

Before any seeds are sown, a gardener envisions the flourishing garden, imagining the types of plants, their layout, and the bountiful harvest.

Similarly, this crucial first step for leaders and board members is about prayerfully envisioning the desired future state of the school after the change has successfully taken place. What will it look, feel, and sound like? What is the ideal outcome? This involves articulating a clear, compelling, faith-infused vision for the change, often rooted in biblical concepts of flourishing, impact, and stewardship. This vivid vision, as Proverbs 29:18a reminds us (“Where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint”), is essential to inspire and motivate everyone involved.

           2 - Plan

           Prepare the Soil

Once the vision is clear, the gardener prepares the physical ground by breaking up hard soil, removing rocks, and enriching the earth.

In the same way, this “P” is about preparing the groundwork for change within the school’s culture. It means prayerfully discerning the need for change, acknowledging existing challenges or opportunities, and cultivating a receptive spiritual and cultural environment among staff, leadership, and the school community. It involves breaking up hardened ground, identifying potential resistance, and ensuring everyone understands the “why” from a faith-based perspective, aligning with Hosea 10:12: “Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap steadfast love; break up your fallow ground, for it is the time to seek the Lord, that he may come and rain righteousness upon you.”

           3 - Plow

           Design the Garden

With the soil prepared, the gardener designs the garden’s layout, deciding what goes where, how it will be irrigated, and the timing for planting.

For Christian schools, this involves strategic development: clearly defining measurable goals that align with the “Picture” and establishing a detailed, faith-informed implementation strategy. Leaders and board members should consider prayer walks, seek wise counsel from spiritual mentors, and design the change with biblical principles like humility, service, and community in mind, trusting Proverbs 16:3: “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.”

4 - Plant: Sow the Seeds

This is the physical act of putting the seeds or young plants into the prepared soil.

In change management, this is the active initiation of the change itself. It involves thoughtfully introducing new policies, programs, or practices—whether it’s rolling out new curriculum, implementing a staff wellness initiative, or adopting innovative teaching methods. This phase must always be accompanied by clear communication, relevant training, and support that emphasizes the spiritual significance of the new approach, embodying the spirit of Galatians 6:9: “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.”

5 - Protect: Guard the Young Shoots

Delicate seedlings require vigilant safeguarding from pests, harsh weather, or being trampled.

Similarly, once new initiatives are planted, they need protection. This means actively monitoring the implementation process, addressing initial challenges, and providing ongoing support and resources. For Christian schools, this might involve offering spiritual encouragement, pastoral care for staff navigating the change, celebrating small victories, and defending the initiative against skepticism or setbacks with grace and perseverance, drawing strength from Nehemiah 4:14 to “Remember the Lord... and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters... and your homes.”

           6 - Prune

           Remove what Hinders

A skilled gardener understands the necessity of cutting away dead or unproductive branches to encourage healthier growth and more fruit.

This “P” is about identifying and removing elements that are no longer serving the vision or are hindering growth. It requires evaluating the change’s effectiveness, making necessary adjustments, and having the courage to let go of old practices that don’t align with the new direction. This tough but essential step, framed in a faith context, becomes an act of discernment, trusting God’s leading for greater fruitfulness, as described in John 15:2: “Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.”

           7 - Pollinate: Cross-fertilize Ideas

Pollination is the natural process of transferring pollen to foster reproduction and diversity, leading to stronger, more resilient plants and fruit.

In change management, this means fostering collaboration and cross-pollination of ideas to bring greater vitality. It encourages departmental sharing of best practices, learning from other Christian schools or educational models, and building networks. It’s about integrating diverse perspectives to enrich the overall impact of the change, building up the body in love, as Ephesians 4:16 illustrates: “From whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.”

8 - Propagate: Multiply and Expand

Finally, a successful gardener takes cuttings or seeds from healthy, thriving plants to start new ones elsewhere, expanding the garden’s reach.

This “P” is all about taking what’s working well and helping it spread. Once the change has taken root and is bearing fruit, it’s time to replicate successes, share lessons learned, and empower others to adopt similar positive transformations. For Christian schools, this means documenting successful initiatives, creating resources and training materials (like the “Growing Forward” series!), and intentionally disseminating effective practices to other classrooms, departments, or even other schools within the faith-based community, fulfilling the vision of 2 Timothy 2:2 to “entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.”

           CONCLUSION

To every leader, principal, and board member entrusted with the sacred calling of Christian education, let this 8-P Framework be more than just a model—let it be an invitation. An invitation not to shrink back from the challenges of change, but to embrace the process with courage, conviction, and a deep-seated faith in God’s guiding hand. Change, though often uncomfortable, is the very pathway to growth and greater fruitfulness.

Don’t be afraid of the process. Just as a gardener trusts the cycles of nature, we are called to trust in the sovereignty of God, who “makes everything beautiful in its time” (Ecclesiastes 3:11). The hard work of plowing, the meticulousness of planning, the patience in protecting, and even the difficult decisions in pruning are all acts of faith. They are steps toward realizing the vibrant “Picture” God has placed in your heart for your school.

In summary the 8P Model offers a faith-driven framework for strategic planning and change management that helps you achieve your purpose and mission as a school.

As Christian schools in Canada navigate the complexities of modern education, they must consider emerging trends that impact their mission, operations, and students.

Here are 10 observations of what I believe are key factors shaping Christian education in Canada:

           1. Embracing Diversity and Inclusion

Canada's growing diversity necessitates Christian schools to create inclusive environments, fostering intercultural dialogue and understanding. This trend encourages schools to re-examine their policies, curricula, and community engagement.

           2. Blended Learning and Technology Integration

The demand for online and blended learning options grows, requiring schools to invest in technology infrastructure and training. This shift enhances student engagement, accessibility, and flexibility.

           3. Prioritizing Mental Health and Wellness

The rising concerns about student mental health necessitate proactive support and resources. Christian schools must develop trauma-informed practices, mindfulness initiatives, and counselling services.

           4. Community Engagement and Partnerships

Strategic partnerships with local businesses, churches, and organizations enhance service-learning, internships, and mentorship opportunities. This trend fosters community involvement and social responsibility.

           5. Adapting to Changing Family Dynamics

Shifting family structures and demographics require flexible programming and support services. Christian schools can respond with family-focused ministries and outreach initiatives.

           6. Navigating Increased Scrutiny and Accountability

Growing regulatory requirements and accreditation standards demand robust policies, procedures, and reporting. Effective governance and leadership ensure compliance and excellence.

           7. Deepening Spiritual Formation and Discipleship

Renewed focus on spiritual formation and discipleship necessitates intentional faith integration and Bible teaching. Chapel programs, mentorship, and service projects enrich students' spiritual journeys.

           8. Embracing Environmental Sustainability

Growing awareness of environmental issues and sustainability encourages eco-friendly practices, outdoor education, and environmental stewardship.

           9. Addressing Teacher Recruitment and Retention

Challenges in recruiting and retaining quality teachers require competitive salaries, benefits, and professional development. Mentorship programs, teacher training, and leadership development foster a strong teaching community.

           10. Ensuring Financial Sustainability

Pressures on school finances necessitate innovative fundraising, grant writing, and financial planning. Entrepreneurial ventures, partnerships, and social enterprise initiatives ensure long-term sustainability.

           CONCLUSION

Christian schools in Canada must adapt to these trends to remain relevant and effective. By embracing diversity, technology, and community engagement while prioritizing spiritual formation, mental health, and environmental sustainability, Christian schools can thrive and continue to provide quality education from a Christian perspective.

           Recommendations

The challenge for us as Christian educational leaders and boards is to stay attentive to changing demographics, technologies, and societal trends, foster a culture of innovation, adaptability, and continuous improvement, prioritize relationships, community engagement, and partnerships, emphasize spiritual formation, discipleship, and faith integration, and invest in teacher development, recruitment, and retention.

By preparing, engaging and be aware of these key factors, Christian schools in Canada can navigate the complexities of modern education and continue to provide a transformative education from a Christian perspective.

The Five Stressors That Test a Christian Teacher’s Well-being

Teaching in a Christian school is a profound calling, but it comes with a set of pressures that can wear down even the most devoted educator. From overflowing lesson plans to the emotional weight of guiding young souls, these stressors affect a teacher’s physical, emotional, and spiritual health—and, in turn, the vitality of the whole school community. Understanding each challenge in depth is the first step toward building a culture where well-being and ministry thrive together.

#1 — Workload and Time Management

Heavy teaching loads, endless grading, and a mountain of administrative tasks leave many teachers feeling like they are constantly playing catchup. When the “todo” list stretches beyond the school day, personal time erodes, sleep becomes a luxury, and the risk of burnout spikes. The pressure to keep academic standards high while maintaining a Christlike witness can make every hour feel like a test of endurance.

           Impact:

Chronic fatigue diminishes creativity, erodes patience, and can lead to a sense of resignation—exactly the opposite of the joyful service a Christian educator is called to embody.

#2 — Classroom Management and Student Behavior

Balancing discipline with compassion is a daily tightrope walk. Teachers must navigate diverse learning styles, varying levels of engagement, and sometimes challenging behaviours that test patience and resolve. The need to enforce rules while extending grace can create internal conflict, especially when students bring external stressors—family issues, trauma, or peer conflicts—into the classroom.

           Impact:

Persistent behavioural challenges drain emotional reserves, heighten anxiety, and can make teachers doubt their effectiveness, even when they are doing exactly what Christ would do: love and guide.

           #3 — Emotional Demands

Christian teachers are often the first line of spiritual and emotional support for their students. They listen to heartfelt prayers, counsel a child wrestling with doubt, and walk alongside families through crises. Managing one’s own emotions while absorbing the weight of others’ struggles can lead to compassion fatigue.

           Impact:

Over time, this emotional labor can cause emotional exhaustion, a sense of isolation, and even spiritual dryness, leaving teachers questioning their calling.

           #4 — Expectations and Pressure

Parents, administrators, and the wider church community hold high hopes for Christian schools. Teachers feel the weight of these expectations—not only to deliver academic excellence but also to model Christlike character. The desire to meet every need can become a relentless pressure, fostering a fear of failure that hovers like a dark cloud over each lesson plan.

           Impact:

This pressure can breed perfectionism, guilt, and a feeling that one is never “good enough,” which undermines confidence and joy in ministry.

           #5 — Boundary Setting and Self-care

The line between “work” and “home” often blurs in a Christian school setting. Teachers are seen as role models, mentors, and sometimes even spiritual leaders outside of school hours. Setting healthy boundaries—saying “no” to extra meetings, protecting family time, or simply taking a day of rest—can feel unfaithful or selfish.

           Impact:

Without intentional self-care, teachers risk burnout, strained relationships, and a decline in physical health, all of which diminish their ability to serve effectively.

           A Word of Encouragement

“Come to me, all who are weary, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

            – Matthew 11:28-29 (NIV)

When the weight of these stressors feels unbearable, remember that the One who calls you to teach also offers a yoke that is easy and a burden that is light. By bringing each challenge before Him, teachers can discover the strength to set boundaries, prioritize self-care, and extend the same grace they receive to their students.

Moving Forward: cultivating a culture of wellness

Schools that recognize these five stressors can begin to weave wellness into the fabric of their mission. Practical steps—such as providing realistic planning periods, offering spiritual formation groups, training in restorative classroom management, and encouraging regular Sabbath practices—help teachers thrive. When educators feel supported, they are better equipped to model Christlike love, foster a positive school culture, and nurture the whole person's growth of every student.

In the end, a healthy teacher is the cornerstone of a thriving Christian school. By addressing the stressors head on and anchoring ourselves in God’s rest, we create a learning environment where both hearts and minds flourish.

Seven Aspects of Your Journey to Wholeness

As a human, you are a complex being with many layers to your life. That’s why well-being is not just about staying physically healthy; it's about nurturing every part of yourself.

Here are seven key aspects of well-being and how deliberately caring for each one can help you lead a more fulfilling life.

           #1 — Emotional Well-being

This involves understanding and managing your emotions, building resilience, and nurturing a positive mindset. It's okay to not feel okay sometimes, but how you handle challenges is what truly matters.

           Bible Verse

"You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you." - Isaiah 26:3 (NIV)

           Try This!

Practice gratitude by writing down three things you're thankful for each day. Even simply making this short mental list will help shift your focus to the positive.

           #2 — Physical Well-being

This aspect involves caring for your body through healthy habits, exercise, and self-care. When you focus on your physical health, you’ll have more energy to enjoy life to the fullest.

"Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?" - 1 Corinthians 6:19 (NIV)

           Try This!

Set aside 10 minutes each day for a walk to enjoy fresh air and lift your spirits.

           #3 — Intellectual Well-being

Here you’re engaging your mind by learning and growing. You’re being curious, creative, and open to new ideas.

"Come, let us learn together, and walk in the light of the Lord." - Isaiah 2:5 (NLT)

           Try This!

Dedicate 30 minutes each week to reading a book or article on a topic that interests you but that you haven't explored yet

This is about building and maintaining meaningful relationships, connecting with others, and feeling a sense of belonging within a community.

Reach out to a friend or family member you haven't spoken to in a while and schedule a call or coffee date.

This aspect is about nurturing your connection with God, exploring your values, and finding purpose. It's about living a life that reflects your faith and spiritual beliefs.

Begin your day with a 5-minute devotion or prayer to establish a positive tone and focus on what's truly important.

This one refers to finding purpose and fulfillment in your work, developing your skills, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Lastly, this aspect involves managing your resources wisely, living within your means, and building financial stability. It's about being responsible stewards of what God has entrusted to you.

Well-being is a journey, not a destination. By intentionally monitoring, caring for, and pursuing each of these aspects, you can lead a more balanced and fulfilling life. Prioritize your well-being, trusting that God will guide and sustain you every step of the way. As you do, you'll shine brighter, live more purposefully, and reflect God's love to those around you.

Six Key Factors for Christian School Success

As Christian schools strive to provide a nurturing environment for students to grow in faith and knowledge, it is essential to recognize the interconnected factors that contribute to their success. In this article, let us explore six key factors that can help Christian schools grow.

           The Student Factor

At the heart of every Christian school is its students. "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it" (Proverbs 22:6). Students are the primary recipients of the education and discipleship provided by the school. As they grow in their faith and understanding of God's Word, they become equipped to impact the world around them. Christian schools must prioritize student engagement, discipleship, and spiritual growth.

           The Teacher Factor

Teachers play a vital role in fulfilling the school's mission. "The lips of the righteous know what is fitting" (Proverbs 10:32). Each teacher has a responsibility to model Christ-like character, integrate biblical principles into their teaching, and mentor students in their spiritual journeys. By understanding their role in the growing process, teachers can effectively disciple students and connect with parents.

           The Parent Factor

Parents are the primary influencers in their children's lives, and their involvement in the school is crucial. "Children are a heritage from the Lord" (Psalm 127:3). As parents grow in their role, their children are directly influenced. Christian schools must recognize parents as gatekeepers and partners in their children's education, providing opportunities for parental involvement and growth.

           The Community Factor

Engaging with the broader community is essential for Christian schools. "Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven" (Matthew 5:16). By serving and partnering with local organizations, schools can demonstrate the love of Christ and impact the community. Evangelism becomes a practical experience of service and inclusion.

           The Church Factor

The local church plays a vital role in the spiritual growth of students and the school community. "The church is the pillar and foundation of the truth" (1 Timothy 3:15). By connecting with local churches and involving them in the school, students can benefit from the church's ministry and resources. This partnership can also provide opportunities for service and outreach.

           The Board Factor

Every Christian school has a board that provides guidance and governance. "A wise leader wields power wisely" (Proverbs 24:5). The board protects, envisions, and resources the school, ensuring its mission and values are upheld. As the school intentionally develops its board, it can experience growth and effectiveness.

           A Systems Approach

These six factors are interconnected, and a change in one area can impact the entire system. "We are the body of Christ, and each of us is a part of it" (1 Corinthians 12:27). By recognizing the interdependence of these factors, Christian schools can adopt a holistic approach to growth and development. As each part of the system works together in harmony, the school can fulfill its mission to impact the next generation and be a place of faith development, understanding, and light.

In conclusion, Christian schools can grow forward by prioritizing these six key factors: student engagement, teacher discipleship, parental involvement, community service, church partnerships, and effective governance. By understanding the biblical principles that underpin each factor and embracing a systems approach, schools can experience growth, effectiveness, and spiritual vitality. May God use Christian schools to impact the next generation and bring glory to His name.

           A Reflection Exercise

           1. Think through and discuss in a group setting each of the 6 factors.

           2. Identify what you think are the factors that you are excelling in.

           3. Identify the areas where you need to work.

           4. For each factor brainstorm an obstacle that is blocking your growth

           5. For each factor, identify a change, action or direction you would like to make.

           6. If money, resources, people, time and staff were not an issue what would your vision be for your school.

           Putting it all Together

            — Take the survey and discuss with your staff, group etc.

           A Way of Calculating

To calculate the overall score, add up the scores for each factor. This will give you a score out of 100.

           Some potential ways to score:

9-10/10: Excellent, consider celebrating successes and identifying areas for continued growth

7-8.9/10: Good, identify areas for improvement and develop strategies for growth

5-6.9/10: Fair, prioritize areas for improvement and develop a plan for addressing weaknesses

0-4.9/10: Needs significant improvement, consider seeking additional support or resources

This survey is designed to provide a snapshot of the school's effectiveness in different areas. You can adjust the scoring system and descriptions to fit your school's specific needs and goals.

A Faith-Driven Approach to Strategic Planning and Kingdom Advancement

As Christian educators, we're called to stewardship and vision, partnering with God to advance His kingdom. Strategic planning and effective change management are essential to fulfilling this calling.

The 8P's Model offers a faith-driven framework for strategic planning and change management that helps you achieve your purpose and mission as a school.

           Here's how each "P" contributes:

           1. Picture (Seek God's Vision)

            - Define your school's purpose, goals, and desired outcomes, seeking God's guidance and direction.

           2. Plan (Discern God's Strategy)

            - Outline your roadmap for achieving God's vision, including key initiatives and priorities.

           3. Plow (Prepare Hearts and Resources)

            - Ensure your school is equipped to execute God's plan, with resources, capacity, and obstacle mitigation.

           4. Plant (Empower Kingdom Work)

            - Put your plan into action, assigning tasks, allocating resources, and driving progress for God's glory.

           5. Protect (Safeguard God's Investment)

            - Safeguard your school's strengths, assets, and progress, minimizing threats and vulnerabilities.

           6. Prune (Refine and Renew)

           - Remove obstacles, streamline processes, and eliminate waste, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness in God's work.

           7. Pollinate (Build Kingdom Partnerships)

            - Foster partnerships, build relationships, and leverage stakeholders to amplify God's impact.

           8. Propagate (Advance God's Kingdom)

            - Ensure your school learns, adapts, and sustains momentum, celebrating successes and adjusting course as needed to advance God's kingdom.

           The Key is Purpose

Purpose is the compass that guides planning and change, giving direction and meaning to our efforts. Without a clear purpose, we're like ships without anchors, tossed about by every wave of circumstance. In planning and change, purpose clarifies priorities, fuels motivation, and empowers perseverance. As Proverbs 29:18 says, "Where there is no vision, the people perish..." Discovering our purpose is foundational to effective planning and change.

Biblically, discovering our purpose involves seeking God's will and aligning with His purposes. Jeremiah 29:11 says, "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Seeking God's presence (Psalm 16:11), understanding our gifts and passions (1 Corinthians 12:4-7), and aligning with God's kingdom purposes (Matthew 6:33) are key to discovering purpose. As leaders, knowing our purpose empowers us to lead with clarity and conviction.

Embrace your purpose as a change agent. Personally, let purpose drive your decisions and actions (1 Corinthians 9:24). Be a change agent who stewards resources, empowers others, and advances God's kingdom (Matthew 25:14-30). Guide others in change by pointing them to God's purposes, empowering them to discover their role, and walking alongside them (Galatians 6:2). Let purpose fuel your passion for change – for yourself, your community, and those you lead.

           1. Seek God's Presence and Guidance

           3. Align with God's Kingdom Purposes

(Matthew 6:33) - Seek first God's kingdom and righteousness.

(Proverbs 15:22) - Seek input from trusted mentors and peers.

           6. Pay Attention to Opportunities and Open Doors

(1 Corinthians 16:9) - Notice opportunities God opens.

As the Executive Director of ACSIEC, I’ve had the joy of walking alongside many dedicated schools, teachers, and principals. I’ve witnessed their triumphs and challenges, and I can genuinely feel the toll that exhaustion and pain can take on those who pour their hearts into their calling. I’ve sat with leaders on the brink of burnout, and it’s a tough place to be.

Yet, amidst these struggles, I’ve also met incredible champions of Christian education. Their dedication is inspiring, but it often comes at a high personal cost. I’ve felt their emotional and spiritual exhaustion and realized something important: our well-being is essential for our effectiveness in ministry.

We need each other for support and encouragement, but in our passion to serve, we sometimes forget to care for ourselves. I’ve seen what happens when we neglect our health, and it’s not pretty.

If well-being isn’t at the heart of our schools, we all suffer. But when we prioritize it, we create an environment where everyone can thrive, allowing our mission to be fulfilled joyfully. I’m passionate about sharing this message, as I believe that when we prioritize the well-being of those serving, we not only strengthen our schools but also reflect the love of our Heavenly Father.

           The Gift of Well-Being

As members of ACSIEC, we are reminded that well-being is a valuable gift from God, essential for living a life that honours Him. In our school community, we are called to care for one another, prioritizing the well-being of students, teachers, parents, and staff. This article explores how we can nurture well-being in all aspects of school life, inspired by God’s love and care for us.

From a Christian perspective, well-being is a multifaceted concept reflecting harmony and wholeness in alignment with God’s will. It fundamentally revolves around nurturing a deep relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ, serving as the foundation for all other aspects of spiritual well-being. As believers engage in prayer, scripture study, and fellowship, they cultivate their spiritual lives, leading to a profound sense of peace and contentment that persists despite life’s challenges.

           Emotional well-being

is marked by joy, peace, and a sense of purpose, even amid turmoil.

           Physical well-being

is also essential, as believers recognize their bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit and strive to honour God through healthy lifestyle choices, stress management, and seeking medical attention when needed.

           Mental well-being

is equally essential; believers seek to renew their minds through the study of scripture and the application of its truths to their lives. By aligning their thoughts with God’s truth, Christians can experience greater clarity, purpose, and direction.

           Social well-being

also plays a crucial role. Christians are called to foster strong relationships within their communities, reflecting God’s love through acts of kindness, support, and service to others. Engaging in meaningful connections with peers, family, and the broader community helps create an environment where everyone feels valued and supported.

Ultimately, Christian well-being is about living a life that reflects God’s love and redemption, marked by shalom—a Hebrew word that encompasses peace, harmony, and wholeness. As believers walk in faith and obedience, they can experience the fullness of life that God intends for them, even amid challenges and uncertainties.

In this sense, well-being is not just a personal achievement but a spiritual journey requiring surrender, trust, and obedience to God’s will. As Christians navigate life’s complexities, they can find peace, hope, and joy in the knowledge that they are loved and redeemed by a sovereign God who cares for their every need.

           A Biblical Foundation for Well-Being

Life can be tough, but Scripture reminds us that God genuinely cares about our well-being. When we’re feeling worn out, He says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

If you’re feeling anxious, you’re not alone. God encourages us to bring our worries to Him. He tells us not to stress about anything, but to pray and share our concerns with thanksgiving. And in return, He’ll give us a peace that’s hard to understand (Philippians 4:6-7).

Also, remember that God wants us to thrive. He wishes for us to prosper in all areas of life, including our health (3 John 1:2). So, let’s take comfort in these words and trust that we’re supported through it all. These verses encourage us to seek God's presence and care in our lives, trusting Him to guide us toward well-being.

Why Well-being Matters in Our Christian School

In our Christian school community, we understand that well-being is not just a concept; it is the very foundation upon which we build our lives. By prioritizing our well-being, we are living out our faith, showcasing our unwavering trust in God’s goodness and care. This commitment empowers us to thrive, not only in our journeys but also in our academic pursuits.

When students, teachers, and parents flourish, we create an environment where learning, teaching, and serving become joyous endeavours. Together, we cultivate an atmosphere rich in support and encouragement, enabling each person to reach their fullest potential.

Moreover, prioritizing well-being strengthens our relationships, fostering a deep sense of community. We are not just individuals; we are a family, bound by love and mutual respect. Let us embrace well-being as a vital aspect of our lives, inspiring one another to grow, learn, and build a nurturing environment where everyone can thrive.

By nurturing wellbeing, our school community can experience:

I would like to challenge each of us—students, parents, teachers, and board members—to step up and act and be part of the well-being of others. Let’s not just talk about wellbeing but start living it! Find those moments for self-care, reach out to a friend, and create those connections that make you, your school, and your relationships stronger. Are you in? Let’s push each other to build a place where wellbeing isn’t just a buzzword but a way of life for all of us!

As we prioritize wellbeing in our classrooms, with our colleagues and personally, let's inspire one another with kindness, care, and compassion. Let's recognize that well-being is a journey, not a destination and that we're all in this together. By nurturing wellbeing in our Christian school community, we can reflect God's love and care for all stakeholders, creating a positive and supportive environment that honours Him.

May we be encouraged by these words: "And let us not forget to do good and to share with those in need, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God." (Hebrews 13:16) Let's strive to create a culture of wellbeing, where everyone can thrive and flourish in all aspects of school life. I desire that as an association, we should pour our hearts together, seeking ways to better one another and looking out for each other.

As educators, we understand that our overall well-being plays a crucial role in our ability to effectively teach, inspire, and support our students. Well-being consists of five interconnected dimensions: emotional, intellectual, spiritual, social, and physical. While all of these aspects are important, this article will focus specifically on the spiritual dimension, exploring its significance, benefits, and practical strategies for nurturing our spiritual health as Christian teachers and educators.

Spiritual well-being is essential to our overall health and quality of life. It encompasses our emotional, mental, and spiritual connections with God, ourselves, and others. As Christians, our faith significantly shapes our values, beliefs, and practices. Growing in our faith is critical for enhancing our spiritual well-being, as it allows us to deepen our understanding of God’s love, develop a stronger sense of purpose and meaning, and cultivate a more intimate relationship with Him. This growth can lead to increased joy, peace, and fulfillment in our lives. In this article, I invite you to reflect on scripture and its implications for our well-being, as well as to engage in self-reflection regarding our spiritual practices and disciplines.

As a community of Christian schools, it is vital that teachers and administrators prioritize their spiritual health and growth. We are called to be examples and mentors to our students, and our own spiritual well-being directly impacts our ability to teach, lead, and inspire them effectively. When we maintain spiritual health, we are better equipped to navigate challenges, build strong relationships, and create a nurturing environment that fosters our students' spiritual growth and development. Additionally, our spiritual well-being influences our capacity to model Christ-like character, teach biblical values, and integrate faith into all aspects of learning. By prioritizing our spiritual growth and well-being, we can cultivate a positive and supportive community that

Here are some verses that highlight the importance of developing our spiritual well-being. They emphasize the need to seek God, pursue spiritual growth, and deepen our relationship with Him. As believers, we are encouraged to prioritize our faith, trust in God's guidance, and strengthen our connection with Him through prayer, scripture, and service. By doing so, we can experience transformation, renewal, and a deeper understanding of God's will for our lives.

As we strive to create a nurturing and faith-based environment in our Christian schools, it's essential to establish clear policies. But what exactly is a policy, and why are they important? I want to explore the significance of policies, the risks of not having them, and identify five key areas to consider when developing policy. I will lay out a process to guide you on this journey. Think of it as a primer to help you not only get started but also gain a deeper understanding.

           What is a Policy?

Think of a policy as a guiding principle that helps us make decisions and ensures consistency in our school's operations. It's like a roadmap that outlines our values and expectations.

           Why are Policies Important?

Policies are crucial for several reasons:

            Clarity and Consistency

: Policies help everyone understand what's expected of them, ensuring we're all on the same page.

            Accountability

: Policies hold us accountable for our actions and decisions, making sure they align with our mission and values.

            Risk Management

: Policies help us prepare for potential risks and challenges, ensuring we're equipped to handle them with confidence.

            Compliance

: Policies ensure we're meeting the necessary laws and regulations, giving us peace of mind.

The Risks of Not Having Policies

Lacking clear policies can compromise the effectiveness and growth of a Christian school. Here are some potential risks:

Inconsistent Decision-Making: Without policies, decisions may be made on a case-by-case basis, leading to inconsistency and potential unfairness.

Increased Risk of Conflict: The lack of clear policies can lead to misunderstandings and conflicts among students, staff, and parents.

Non-Compliance with Laws and Regulations: Without clear policies, schools may inadvertently fail to comply with relevant laws and regulations, thereby putting themselves at risk of legal issues.

Damage to Reputation: The absence of clear policies can harm a school's reputation and credibility, making it more challenging to attract students and staff.

Developing Effective Policies: A Process to Consider

When developing policies, leaders should consider the following process:

Identify the Need: Determine the specific need for a policy, taking into account the school's mission, values, and goals.

Research and Gather Input: Research relevant laws and regulations, and gather input from stakeholders, including students, staff, and parents.

Draft the Policy: Draft the policy, ensuring it is clear, concise, and aligned with the school's mission and values.

Review and Revise: Review and revise the policy, taking into account stakeholder feedback and ensuring it aligns with the school's needs.

Approve and Implement: Approve and implement the policy, ensuring all stakeholders are aware of it and understand its expectations.

Monitor and Evaluate: Monitor and evaluate the policy's effectiveness, making necessary revisions.

As Christian schools, teachers and believers are called to a high and noble purpose: to shape our students' minds, hearts, and souls. But what is the foundation of our teaching practice? What is the source of our authority and guidance? The answer lies in 2 Timothy 3:16, a verse crucial for us to understand as teachers.

           The Inspiration of Scripture

The verse begins by stating that "God inspires all Scripture" (2 Timothy 3:16, NIV). This affirmation is foundational to understanding the Bible and its role in our teaching practice. The word "inspired" comes from the Greek word "theopneustos," which means "God-breathed." This emphasizes that Scripture is not merely a human product, but a divine revelation that carries the authority and power of God.

           Four Facets of Scripture's Purpose

But 2 Timothy 3:16 goes further, outlining four specific facets of Scripture's purpose:

            Teaching:

Scripture is "profitable for teaching" (2 Timothy 3:16, NIV). This emphasizes the role of Scripture in instructing and guiding our students in the ways of God. As teachers, we are called to use Scripture to teach our students the truth about God, themselves, and the world around them.

            Reproof:

Scripture is also "profitable for reproof" (2 Timothy 3:16, NIV). This means that Scripture can convict and correct our students (and us!) when we stray from the path of righteousness. As teachers, we must be willing to use Scripture to confront and correct our students, when necessary, lovingly.

            Correction:

In addition to reproof, Scripture is "profitable for correction" (2 Timothy 3:16, NIV). It guides us in restoring and redirecting our students when they go astray. As teachers, we must be skilled at using Scripture to help our students get back on track and move forward in their spiritual journey.

Training in Righteousness: Scripture is "profitable for training in righteousness" (2 Timothy 3:16, NIV). This emphasizes the role of Scripture in shaping our students' character and moral fiber. As teachers, we are called to use Scripture to train our students in righteousness, helping them develop the habits, values, and virtues that will serve them well throughout their lives.

           Implications for Christian Education

So what are the implications of 2 Timothy 3:16 for Christian education? Here are a few key takeaways:

Scripture is our authority: Christian educators must recognize that Scripture is our ultimate authority and guide. We must be committed to teaching and using Scripture to inform our practice.

Scripture is our foundation: 2 Timothy 3:16 emphasizes that Scripture is the foundation of our teaching practice. We must intentionally use Scripture to teach, reprove, correct, and train our students.

Scripture is our guide for spiritual formation: 2 Timothy 3:16 reminds us of this. We must be committed to using Scripture to shape our students' character and spiritual lives.

By embracing the principles outlined in 2 Timothy 3:16, we can build a Christian education that is grounded in Scripture, centered on Christ, and committed to shaping the next generation of disciples.

By immersing ourselves in Scripture, we not only deepen our own understanding but also empower our students to embrace their faith with courage and conviction. Let us strive to be vessels of God's truth, guiding the next generation to not only learn but to live out their beliefs in a world that desperately needs His light. Together, we can create an environment where faith and learning intertwine, shaping hearts and minds for His glory. Let us go forward with purpose, knowing that our efforts are laying a foundation of faith that will impact lives for eternity.
